Rīgas ūdens (Riga's water utility) lists Brekši among the neighbourhoods where the water main or sewer is unavailable or only partly available on certain streets. We install spike wells and boreholes, clean wells and plan water for new houses.
What is known about the water main in Brekši
In the Rīgas ūdens 2025 contract performance report, Brekši is on the list of neighbourhoods with partly available services, but the report does not name the streets and does not say whether the water main, the sewer or both are missing. So no general answer like “Brekši has no water main” can be given. Find out about your own address with the Rīgas ūdens “Service availability” form or on vaitevtovajag.lv, and write in your request what it showed.
If the street has the network, compare connecting with your own source: connecting to mains water. If there is no network, the house's water will come from a spike well, a borehole or a dug well (concrete-ring well), and the choice depends on the ground and how much water you need.
Spike well, borehole or dug well: how we choose in Brekši
- Spike well: suitable if there is water-bearing sand below the topsoil and the water level does not drop below 7–8 m while pumping. It is installed without heavy machinery, so it also suits a small garden or a plot that is already landscaped.
- Borehole: if the house is lived in all year, if it needs a lot of water for the shower and washing machine, or if the spike well hits clay and stones instead of sand. The deeper aquifer is covered from above by denser sediments.
- Dug well: if you need a water reserve you can draw on without electricity too, and the groundwater is close. Its upper layer is more easily affected by surface water.
Only drilling shows reliably which option will work on a given plot. Before the job we look at the available borehole data and the depth of the neighbours' sources, but we do not promise the amount or quality of water in advance. If a spike well cannot be installed at the first spot, we say so straight away and agree on the next step. Pros and cons: spike well or borehole.
Near the lake and on lower ground
Brekši lies close to the lake, forests and lower ground with seasonal moisture. That does not mean every plot has a problem, but we take it into account in three respects:
- The source's location: on the highest part of the plot, away from spots where meltwater stands in spring, with the ground sloping away from the well or spike well head.
- The top of the well: the ring must be above ground, with a clay layer around it and a tight lid, so that rainwater does not run in through the top joint.
- After flooding: if the well or the spike well pit has been flooded, the well is pumped out, cleaned and disinfected, and the water is tested at a laboratory before drinking.
Putting a flooded well right: well cleaning in Brekši costs from €150 with disinfection. If the water is still cloudy after cleaning, we explain the causes on the page cloudy well water.
An empty plot: plan the water before the house
Brekši still has thinly built-up areas and small new housing developments. On an empty plot a drilling rig can drive anywhere, but once the foundations, fence and paving are in, the choice of spot narrows. That is why it is worth installing the source before construction: the builders have water, and later the pipe to the house is short and straight. How to plan it together with the entry and the utility room: water supply for a new house.
Riga's rules must also be taken into account. If the public system with a branch is already at the plot boundary, connection is compulsory for a new building that uses water. Your own source then stays for the garden and must be completely separated from the house's plumbing.
Biķernieku iela and local roads provide access, but public transport options are more limited. For us that only means we agree the working day with you in advance, so that someone is on site to open the gate and show the underground services.
Permits for a home source in Brekši
In the building code a spike well is a driven well, which counts as a water abstraction borehole, so the same conditions apply to it as to a shallow borehole. If it is no deeper than 20 m and extraction does not exceed 10 m³ per day, no licence from the State Environmental Service (VVD) is needed. For a new spike well, well or borehole as a first-group engineering structure, the regulations require an explanatory memorandum (paskaidrojuma raksts) at the municipal building authority (būvvalde), but the VVD diagrams describe the steps differently, so ask the Riga building authority.

Prices in Brekši and nearby neighbourhoods
A spike well costs from €350, usually €350–650, without the pump, pressure tank and connection to the house. A borehole from €65/m, well cleaning with disinfection from €150. Brekši is a Riga neighbourhood, so we charge no call-out fee. All items: prices.
