The town's water comes from five artesian boreholes 185–220 m deep and is treated in several stages. A private borehole has no such treatment, so there you first need to know what is in the water, and only then choose the equipment.
Where Olaine's town water comes from
For Olaine town, OŪS takes water from five artesian boreholes in the Parka section: they are 218, 212, 210, 220 and 185 m deep and were drilled in 1975 (three), 1994 and 2002. The permitted abstraction is 3,535 m³ per day. The municipal water treatment plant has mechanical filtration, biological iron removal, manganese removal and nanofiltration for partial desalination, that is, reducing sulphates.
The water leaving the plant is tested twice a week, the distribution network and all boreholes twice a year. The quality page gives the limit values (iron 0.2 mg/l, manganese 0.05 mg/l) and a hardness scale, but the measured Olaine values are not published.
If the house is connected to the network and the water seems hard or tastes odd, test it: the basic water testing package from €35 shows the hardness, iron, manganese and pH at your tap. Based on the result, we will tell you whether a filter is needed at all.
Where Olaine municipality has the network and where there is no information
OŪS water supply covers Olaine town, Grēnes village and Pārolaine village. The merged company Zeiferti used to supply the villages of Jaunolaine and Stūnīši. We found no public information about other villages, such as Medemciems and Rājumi, or about areas where houses use their own sources.
The place description characterises Olaine as a planned industrial and residential town with apartment buildings, areas of detached houses and extensive forests and bogs around it; drainage and groundwater are mentioned too. In a boggy, drained spot it matters exactly where the source is: in a low spot surface water gets into a well or along a spike well pipe more easily, and the water may be brownish or smell. We assume nothing in advance about the water on your particular plot.
For your own source: what to test and how to treat it
If your borehole or well is not on the network, you are responsible for the water yourself. Cabinet Regulation No. 547 on drinking water is not mandatory for a private source used by fewer than 50 people or from which up to 10 m³ per day is taken, but the laboratory compares the result with its limit values. We take the sample ourselves and deliver it to an accredited laboratory; the full test with microbiology costs from €95.
| Test result | What is usually done |
|---|---|
| Iron above 200 µg/l or manganese above 50 µg/l | Iron removal filter with installation, from €600 |
| High hardness, limescale | Water softener with installation, from €600 |
| Rotten egg (hydrogen sulphide) smell | Aeration or oxidation before the filter |
| Coliforms or E. coli | Checking and disinfecting the source, then a UV unit |
| A lot of sulphates or salts | Reverse osmosis for drinking water, from €250 |
The Olaine example shows clearly that even deep artesian water is not always ready to use: the town plant needs both iron removal and nanofiltration. A private borehole is usually much shallower and takes water from a different aquifer, so we choose the filter only from its test. The equipment and its order: water treatment, UV water disinfection, rotten egg smell in water.
A new source or a connection in Olaine
Olaine municipality binding regulations SN4/2018 state that in built-up areas where the spatial plan provides for public systems, connection is mandatory, including when a building is rebuilt. The technical conditions are valid for two years, OŪS installs the meter, and the owner pays for the service pipe from the property to the first gate valve or inspection chamber. We found no co-financing for private house connections in Olaine municipality. The tariff from 01.06.2026 is €1.21/m³ excluding VAT.
If a house has two independent water sources, they must be separated (point 11), and the contract application must give the technical information or a diagram of the local water intake (point 46.6).
If there is no network, we offer a borehole in Olaine from €65/m or a spike well (“spice” in Latvian) from €350, if the water is shallow and the ground allows it. For a borehole deeper than 20 m, the drilling company applies for the licence, and after the work the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC) approves the borehole passport. For production and warehouse sites using from 10 m³ per day: borehole for a business.
