In Riga and the Riga region we repair pump stations and submersible borehole and well pumps, and we tell you when a repair would cost almost as much as a new pump. In your request, describe what is happening: the pump does not work, hums, does not switch off or gives weak pressure.
The most common faults and what they mean
| What you see | Most common cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| The pump hums but does not turn | A faulty capacitor or a seized rotor | We check the capacitor, free the shaft and replace the bearings if needed |
| The pump runs but no water comes | Air on the suction side, an empty spike well or well, a faulty non-return valve | We find the leak, replace the valve and prime the pump |
| The pump does not switch off | A worn pressure switch, worn impellers or a leak in the system | We check the pressure switch and the pump pressure, and look for leaks |
| The pump switches on too often | No air in the pressure tank or a burst membrane | We check the pre-charge and the membrane |
| Water leaks from the pump body | A worn shaft seal or a crack after freezing | We replace the seal; a cracked body usually means replacement |
| It trips the fuse | Moisture in the motor, a damaged cable or winding | We measure the insulation; rewinding a burnt-out motor rarely pays |
Repair or replace
A repair is worth it if the fault is in a part that can be bought separately: the pressure switch, the capacitor, the shaft seal, the bearings, the non-return valve or the pressure tank membrane. A repair like that can usually be done in one visit.
Replacing is the better deal if the motor has burnt out, the body has cracked from frost, the impellers are worn by sand or the pump is so old that parts are no longer made. A pump that simply does not fit should also be replaced: too weak for a house with filters and an upper floor, or too powerful for the source. Then we offer a suitable model: borehole pump replacement.
Pump station repair and submersible pump repair
A pump station sits in the house, so we do most of the work on site. A submersible pump first has to be lifted out of the borehole or the well. Before that we check everything above ground so the pump is not lifted out for nothing.
If the pump has to be repaired in the workshop, we tell you how long it will take and agree how you will manage without water in the meantime. The pressure tank and the pressure switch can often be fixed straight away, because they are standard parts.
What you can check yourself before requesting a repair
- Whether the pump has power: the fuse, the residual current device (RCD) and the socket, if the pump is plugged into one.
- What the pressure gauge shows when the pump switches on and when it switches off.
- Whether there is a leak anywhere: a tap, the toilet cistern, a garden hose, a damp spot in the basement.
- Whether there is water in the well. In a shallow well you can see the level by opening the cover.
- In winter: whether the pump station and the pipes have frozen.
Do not open the pressure switch or the capacitor box while it is live, and do not run the pump without water to see whether it works. Your observations in the request help us bring the right parts.
Pressure tank and pressure switch repair
Not every pump repair is a repair of the pump. Often it is enough to top up the air in the pressure tank, replace the membrane or clean the pressure switch inlet clogged with iron deposits. We replace a pressure switch with burnt contacts with a new one, because repairing it does not pay. If the pressure tank's flange or vessel has rusted, we replace the whole pressure tank and choose a size that matches the pump's output.
What water pump repair costs
We name the repair price once we know the fault, because replacing a capacitor and lifting a stuck borehole pump are very different jobs. The price depends on:
- what is broken and what the part costs;
- whether the pump is in the house, or has to be lifted out of a well or a borehole, and from what depth;
- whether the repair can be done on site or the pump has to go to the workshop;
- the distance, if the house is outside the Riga region.
If a repair does not pay, installing a new submersible pump costs from €200 (pump extra). Prices: prices.
