What most often worries people is limescale and taste. We take the sample, deliver it to an accredited laboratory, explain the result and, if needed, install or service a filter.
The Pļavnieki network and the 2025 works
Pļavnieki is not on the list in the Rīgas ūdens 2025 report of neighbourhoods where water supply or sewerage is missing in some streets. In the same year the company renewed water mains in Pļavnieki; this was part of replacing about 14.7 km of pipes in 13 neighbourhoods. An apartment building here does not need its own borehole or spike well, and we do not recommend one either.
Pļavnieki is on the right bank of the Daugava, where, according to Rīgas ūdens data, the water comes from the Baltezers and Zaķumuiža groundwater wellfields. The company does not publish separate quality figures for the neighbourhood.
Hardness: what 1.82 mmol/l means
The Rīgas ūdens average hardness in the network was 1.68 mmol/l in 2023, 1.74 mmol/l in 2024 and 1.82 mmol/l in 2025, while in its FAQ section the company answers that the hardness is up to 2 mmol/l. The drinking water rules, Cabinet Regulation No. 547, set no limit value for hardness at all, so deciding to soften is a practical matter, not a health one.
- A white layer builds up in the kettle and on the shower glass: that is limescale, and it can be removed regularly with acetic acid or citric acid.
- For a coffee machine or a steam iron, the manufacturer often recommends softened water: then a cartridge for that particular appliance is enough.
- A whole-flat water softener with a salt tank needs space, a drain connection and salt, and in a flat with this hardness it rarely pays off.
If you want to know your tap's hardness in figures, a basic test from €35 shows the hardness, pH, iron and other main parameters.
Dishwasher and coffee machine settings often ask for hardness in German degrees. 1 mmol/l is about 5.6 °dH, so 1.82 mmol/l is around 10 °dH. Set the machine by this figure, and salt use will be appropriate rather than too high.
When it is worth ordering a test in a flat
- The water has changed colour, smell or taste, and this does not go away after running the tap.
- Before you buy an expensive filter, so you do not install equipment for a problem that does not exist.
- After replacing the flat's pipes or repairs to the building's risers.
- After moving into a flat, if you want a result in figures rather than an assumption.
We take the sample from the kitchen tap in laboratory bottles: we remove the aerator, run the water until the temperature is steady and fill the chemistry bottle to the top. If there is already a filter, we take two samples, before and after the filter, to see what it does. More about sampling and parameters: water testing.

A kitchen filter: installation and maintenance
A reverse osmosis filter under the sink costs from €250 with installation. It needs space in the cabinet, a connection to the cold water and the drain, and a separate tap on the sink. After that the filter works only if it is maintained: the pre-filter cartridges and the membrane are changed according to the manufacturer's schedule and the amount of water it has passed.
Signs that maintenance is overdue: the filter fills the tank more slowly, the water develops a taste, or the cartridges have not been changed for longer than the manufacturer recommends. We do maintenance as work charged by time, from €40/h, and bring cartridges for your filter model if you give it in your request. More: water filter maintenance.
New projects and inner courtyards
Pļavnieki also has newer residential projects. In Riga a new building must connect if there is already a public system with a branch at the plot boundary, so the water questions there are the same as in the old estates: taste, hardness and filters. Access inside the blocks and parking are the main practical factors, but they do not get in the way of a test or a filter, because the job needs only a car and a tool bag.
Prices and neighbouring areas
A basic test from €35, the full test with microbiology from €95, a reverse osmosis filter with installation from €250, filter maintenance from €40/h, a water softener with installation from €600 if you do choose one. All prices: prices.
