The questions are about what happens to the water on its way through the building's old pipework, and about a filter for drinking water or a coffee machine. We install filters in flats and small businesses and take water samples from the tap.
Where the water in Avoti comes from
The neighbourhood's name (avoti means springs) does not mean the water here is taken from springs. Avoti is a densely built neighbourhood near the centre with a historic street grid, and in the 2025 report of Rīgas ūdens (Riga's water utility) it is not among the neighbourhoods where services are only partly available. A new spike well (“spice” in Latvian) or borehole is not needed here, and the courtyards would have neither the room nor the access for the equipment.
Avoti is on the right bank of the Daugava. Rīgas ūdens states that right-bank consumers receive groundwater from the Baltezers and Zaķumuiža water abstraction sites, where iron and manganese are reduced before supply. The company's published 2025 averages for the whole network: iron 0.11 mg/l, manganese 0.02 mg/l, hardness 1.82 mmol/l, pH 7.1. Rīgas ūdens does not publish separate figures for Avoti.
Brown water in an old apartment building: the network or the building's pipes?
If yellowish water comes from the tap or a filter cartridge quickly turns brown, the cause may be in the network or in the building's internal pipework. To avoid guessing, we go step by step.
- Run the tap If the water clears after a few minutes, it has most likely been standing in the old pipe. If not, the problem may be wider.
- Ask the neighbours and the building manager If the whole building or street has the same problem, report it to the building manager and to Rīgas ūdens.
- Test from the tap We take a sample straight from your tap, and an accredited laboratory measures iron, manganese and turbidity. A basic test costs from €35.
- Compare We compare the result with the iron limit of 200 µg/l in Cabinet Regulation No. 547 on drinking water and with the network average of 0.11 mg/l published by Rīgas ūdens. If the tap has far more iron, the likely cause is the building's pipes.
If the building's pipes are to blame, the long-term solution is replacing the risers or the flat's pipes, which is decided together with the building manager. Until then, a mechanical pre-filter at the flat's inlet catches rust particles and protects the mixer taps, the water heater and the washing machine.
A filter in a flat: what works and what is not needed
In Avoti the water comes from the city network, so whole-house iron removal, as fitted in private houses with their own borehole, is usually not needed. A flat has three sensible options, and we choose according to what exactly bothers you.
- A mechanical pre-filter at the inlet: against rust and sand particles from old pipes.
- A reverse osmosis filter under the kitchen sink: for drinking water and tea, from €250 with installation.
- A carbon filter or cartridge: if the taste or smell bothers you but the test is fine.
Before fitting a reverse osmosis filter we check whether there is enough room under the sink for the tank and whether it can be connected to the drain, because reverse osmosis sends part of the water to the sewer. In old kitchens with a narrow cupboard, a compact filter without a tank is sometimes the better option. If the flat has a water heater, a pre-filter in front of it protects it from rust particles.
A water softener is usually not needed for a single flat: Rīgas ūdens states hardness of up to 2 mmol/l, and Cabinet Regulation No. 547 sets no limit for hardness. If limescale is a problem in the kettle or the coffee machine, a filter on that appliance is enough. More: water treatment.
For ground-floor cafés and workshops
The ground floors in Avoti hold places to eat, salons and premises for creative services. For a coffee machine and a dishwasher the manufacturer usually states the permitted water hardness, and limescale damages these appliances faster than in a household. We choose the filter or softening cartridge by the appliance's requirements and the consumption, and draw up the cartridge replacement schedule by the litres used.
If you like, we replace the filters for you: water filter maintenance, labour from €40/h. For a landlord or a tenant, a tap test is also useful when there is a dispute about the water: the result is a fact, not an opinion.
Working in a densely built area
In Avoti access depends on the streets, not the equipment: narrow courtyards, gates with a code and little parking around Aleksandra Čaka iela and Avotu iela. Filters need no heavy equipment; we carry them in by hand. In your request, say which floor it is, whether there is a lift, where a car can stop and where the flat's water inlet or shut-off valves are.
