Some plots need water only in summer for watering, others need it all year for a house. We install spike wells, clean wells, fit and repair pumps and pressure tanks, and test the water at an accredited laboratory.

Does Aplokciems have a city water main

Aplokciems is not named separately in the 2025 report or the project pages of Rīgas ūdens (Riga's water utility), so we cannot say in general that the network is or is not there. For neighbouring Jaunciems the report says that water supply and sewerage are available only to blocks of flats. You can find out reliably for your own address with the Rīgas ūdens “Service availability” form or on vaitevtovajag.lv.

You reach the neighbourhood by local streets that join Jaunciema gatve. If there is no network next to the plot, water comes from your own well or spike well, and the owner is responsible for its quality.

An allotment: a spike well for summer and getting ready for winter

An allotment usually needs no more than one spike well and a surface pump. We install the spike well with small equipment and lay the pipe shallow, because it is used only in the warm season, and after the job we show you where the filter is and what the water level is. If the soil in the allotment is sandy and the water is no deeper than a surface pump can reach, a spike well is usually the cheapest source.

  • For a greenhouse and beds: a simple pump with a switch and a hose, no pressure tank.
  • For drip irrigation: a mechanical filter before the lines, otherwise sand and iron deposits clog the drippers.
  • In autumn: drain the pump and the above-ground pipes and bring the pump somewhere warm; the spike well itself stays in the ground.

We describe winter preparation step by step on the page winterising the water supply system. If the allotment has a summer house with a kitchen and a shower: spike well installation for a summer house.

A detached house with its own well: pump and pressure tank

In a house lived in all year, water problems are often not in the source itself but in the pump. The most common complaints: the pump switches on every time you open a tap; the shower pressure drops when another tap is opened; the pump starts drawing air or sand.

  • Frequent switching on: usually the pressure tank is short of air pressure or the membrane has split. We describe the causes and the check on the page water pump switches on too often.
  • Air or sand: the intake in the well is too close to the bottom, or the water level has dropped. We raise the pump or clean the well and lay a new bottom filter.
  • A new pump for the well: chosen by the well's depth, inflow and the house's consumption; installing a submersible pump costs from €200 plus the pump: well pump.

Near the lake and the forest: what a well needs

In Aplokciems shorelines, forests and lower ground are close by, and that adds to seasonal moisture. It does not mean every well has a problem, but for a shallow source the top part matters most: the top ring must sit above ground, there must be a clay layer around it, and the ground must slope away from the well. Under trees, roots can damage the joints of a well and leaves fall in.

If the well turns cloudy after heavy rain or smells of silt, we clean and disinfect it, from €150: well cleaning in Aplokciems. If the smell stays after that, we explain the causes on the page well water smells. Before drinking the water, send it for a full test with microbiology, from €95.

Watering and 10 m³ per day

Legally a spike well is a borehole, and it needs no licence from the State Environmental Service (VVD) as long as it is no deeper than 20 m and no more than 10 m³ is taken from it per day. An allotment is far from that limit: 10 mm of water on 100 m² of beds is only 1 m³. Only a large lawn watered every day, or a swimming pool, can reach the limit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have a spike well on an allotment with no electricity?

The spike well can be installed, but the pump needs power. Without electricity you use a hand pump on the spike well, or a pump with a battery or a generator. A hand pump is fine for beds and a greenhouse, but not for sprinklers.

The pressure tank clicks and the pump switches on for every cup. What should I do?

Most often the pressure tank has too little air or a damaged membrane. You can check the air pressure with a tyre gauge while the system is depressurised. If the problem comes back after refilling, the membrane must be replaced, and we can do that together with a pump check.

Can I use a neighbour's spike well or well if it is on the boundary?

Technically yes, if you both agree on the pipes, the pump and the costs. Remember that you are responsible for the water quality yourselves, and a shared source needs a clear agreement on who cleans and repairs it.

How deep will a spike well on an allotment be?

That depends on the groundwater at the exact spot. Rīgas ūdens says in its explanation that spike wells are usually 4–15 m deep. What matters most is that the water level while pumping stays within a surface pump's reach, in practice 7–8 m; if it is deeper, you need a different solution.
