Jūrmalas ūdens publishes water figures for each of its four treatment stations, and they differ considerably: hardness in 2026 ranged from 2.33 to 4.0 mmol/l. Below we explain this data, what it means for choosing a filter and how we install spike wells and boreholes in Jūrmala.
Four stations, different water
| Station | Hardness, mmol/l | Sulphates, mg/l | Sodium, mg/l | Iron, µg/l |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dzintari | 3.9 | 210 | 84 | 9.7 |
| Jaundubulti | 4.0 | 170 | 86 | 14.0 |
| Kauguri | 2.68 | 160 | 15.0 | 12.5 |
| Ķemeri | 2.33 | 160 | 10.1 | 16.0 |
These are 2026 averages up to 19.08. Limit values: sulphates 250 mg/l, sodium 200 mg/l, iron 200 µg/l; there is no limit for hardness. Manganese in 2026 was below 10 µg/l, and 11 µg/l at the Kauguri station (limit 50 µg/l).
Iron at all stations is far below the limit, so a house on the network does not need iron removal. The difference is in hardness. If your water comes from the Dzintari or Jaundubulti stations (about 4 mmol/l), limescale forms quickly, and water softener installation (from €600) often pays for itself because of the water heater and household appliances. With 2.33–2.68 mmol/l from the Kauguri and Ķemeri stations, it is worth deciding by how much limescale you see. Ask Jūrmalas ūdens which station supplies your street; we cannot tell that from the address.
Hardness changes over time: in 2024 it was 3.82–4.45 mmol/l at all stations. In stage II, sulphate removal was built at the Dzintari and Jaundubulti stations, and the Ķemeri station was completely rebuilt.
A spike well in sandy ground: why it often suits Jūrmala
Jūrmala has sandy ground and pine forests. In sand, a spike well is driven or drilled in quickly, and water flows into the filter well, so for a summer house or garden a spike well is often the cheapest source. Spike well installation in Jūrmala costs from €350, without the pump and the connection to the house.
Fine sand, however, needs the right filter screen, otherwise the spike well clogs quickly or the pump draws in sand. We do not guess the layers and water depth on a particular plot in advance; we see them while drilling and from neighbours' sources.
Shallow water in sand is easy to reach, but also easy to pollute. If you want to drink the spike well water, we recommend a full water test with microbiology (from €95), especially in an old summer-house area where neighbours may have old septic tanks.
Seasonal houses, narrow streets and historic buildings
Many Jūrmala properties are used seasonally. For a spike well with a surface pump, the pump and pipes have to be drained before winter unless they are in a room that does not freeze: winterising the water supply system.
Majori, Bulduri, Kauguri and Ķemeri are separate parts of the town, not one work location, and in summer traffic and parking near the beach are more difficult. In heritage areas and narrow streets the drilling rig cannot be parked just anywhere, so we agree the location and time in advance, and we recommend planning larger jobs outside the summer season.
Jūrmala rules on your own source
Jūrmala City Council binding regulations No. 38 (2024) mention your own source several times. When requesting technical conditions, the owner confirms in writing that the borehole or spike well is not connected to the network (point 13.3). If a building has two systems, an air gap of at least 50 mm or a non-return valve is needed (point 22). A user with their own borehole or spike well who discharges wastewater into the city sewer must document their water abstraction source and its equipment (point 56).
Jūrmalas ūdens prepares technical conditions within 10 working days free of charge, they are valid for two years, and the connection is at the owner's expense; we found no co-financing (subsidy). The network keeps growing: in stages II and III, water mains were built in Kauguri, Sloka, Kaugurciems, Vaivari, Asari, Melluži, Valteri and Ķemeri, and stage IV plans another 88 km of water mains, whose locations are not named. The explanatory note to the regulations says that as connections are built, there will be fewer local water abstraction points.
If you no longer use the borehole after connection, its user must mothball or decommission it, and a report is drawn up on the decommissioning. A plugged borehole no longer lets surface water reach a deeper aquifer: borehole decommissioning.
